The postcard, above, shows City Island in Daytona Beach. The island, just east of Downtown Daytona Beach, has been home of horse and car racing and lots of baseball. American sports history was made when Jackie Robinson played baseball on the island when “Both Jacksonville and Sanford refused to allow the game due to segregation laws. Daytona Beach permitted the game, which was played on March 17, 1946 [5 years before this postcard]. This contributed to Robinson breaking the Major Leagues’ color barrier the following year when he joined the Dodgers.” You can learn more by clicking here: http://tinyurl.com/oz5dhaz.

Since 1951 more land was dredged to expand the island to add the Volusia County Courthouse Annex and the main branch of the county library system.

This postcard was mailed August 14th, 1951 by Ann to Mrs. J.A. Parrish of Nashville, Tennessee. Ann writes that the trip “is doing good things for our disposition. Am getting a tan.”

This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
