This is a terrific book that explains where the term “Florida Cracker” came from, stories of Florida Crackers, cracker locations, cracker foods, cracker architecture, etc., etc. Two parts that are fun to read are the story of grits and Frederic Remington finding out that Florida cowmen are not western cowboys. There’s also a very interesting chapter of the moonshine business. One of my favorite parts is an illustrated part of options early Floridians had to keep bugs away. Such as a chair with a fan installed to keep pests away.

Ste. Claire writing of the culture of the Florida cracker shows deep respect and understanding. As is the case when the writing is done from the heart, the book is very good reading with much insight.

I highly recommend adding this book to your library. But I suggest reading parts over time. You’ll find yourself reading a chapter and walking away comparing your life today to that of the early crackers. You’ll value the information more if you do that comparison over time and not all at once.
