Swampy’s #Florida Postcards: ‘Dam’ Yankee’ in Fort Lauderdale, 1961.
This is my favorite name for a motel/hotel/etc. in our state! Right on A1A in the heart of the beach tourists! Now, it would appear this name is due to a general dislike of the Northerner. However, it’s important to note that right across the street from this motel is the hugely popular Yankee Clipper hotel. A battle brewed? Jealousy? If you know, please respond below!
I’m not sure how the name ‘Dam’ Yankee’ came about, but I believe this has more to do with the competition than Northerners. Though, it could be a combination of both.
The motel is still with us, though the name is gone. Today the name is the boring, trite ‘Harbor Beach Inn’.
This postcard was mailed August 2nd, 1961 by the owner, Gil Couchman. On the back is a note from Couchman that “Special rates now available” and signed. The back also states, and spelled correctly, “Welcome Y’All!” The card was mailed to Leonard Lapointe in Arlington, Virginia.
Here’s what the hotel looks like today:

This was our family motel. We moved from Chicago and lived in Lauderdale for years…great place to grow up!
