Swampy’s #Florida Ads from today, 1898 – Harry Wear’s Palace Saloon, Tampa.
Fort Brooke was the earlier name for Tampa. The name had long gone at this point. Though could have been used to cover the, what we call now, Harbor Island, area. The tricky wording might be to throw those who knew where the real fashionable hotel in the area was: The Tampa Bay Hotel built by Henry Plant and opened in 1891. The Plant hotel still stands. The saloon has disappeared in time.
This advertisement was in the February 23rd, 1898 edition of the Tampa Tribune.
