Swampy’s #Florida photos: Coral Gables High School 1956.
Swampy’s friend, Gloria Neiger Bushong posted her celebrating 60 years today since graduating Coral Gables Senior High School. Well, so happens Swampy’s Rob Smith’s mother graduated 2 years earlier.
Digging into Rob’s yearbooks, here is a photo of the school from the 1956 Cavaleon yearbook. The photo is broken up by spanning two pages. Blame could go to Rob’s mother who was the yearbook photo editor.
The school had opened originally in 1925 as the Florida Boom! had developed Coral Gables, thanks to Carl Fisher and George Merrick. All those families had children needing some schoolin’. The population increased, due to the Depression, and a larger high school was needed. This new location on Bird Road opened in 1950. The later expansion of Bird Road cut away most of the green space seen here and there have been other alterations, but the general front facade of the school looks the same.
I’ll post a few more photos, including one of one of the most famous people that ever graduated from the school, as the evening rolls on.
