Swampy’s Florida historic photos: Hard work in Rockdale, 1920s.
In South Dade County, in the community of Rockdale, now known more as Palmetto, Arthur Harris had 85 acres of tomatoes to harvest each Winter. Mark came to the rescue to work, traveling from his home over by Lake Okeechobee to be sure Harris’ tomato crop got to market. Mark liked to work harvesting the thousands of tomatoes throughout the many acres of land to the shipping area to be crated. It was hard, hard work, but Mark loved the job.
Mark didn’t come from Lake Okeechobee alone. His friend Mr. Inslow, on the left in the photograph, helped with transporting the workaholic Mark…Mark the Mule…to his work place.
This photo is from ‘A Journey Through Time: A Pictorial History of South Dade’ by Paul George.
