The photo is of Swampy and Big Boy in Sanford in June, 2010.

Big Boy restaurants returned to Florida in the mid-2000s to about 2011. There were only a handful built between Jacksonville and Sanford. I frequented one near the Seminole and Orange County line, west of Maitland, and one in Sanford. Both appeared to stay pretty busy. The one near Maitland closed first and then the one in Sanford about a year later. The Sanford one was the last to close and ended another try by Big Boy coming into Florida.

So many very popular businesses outside Florida have ventured into the state with the mistaken idea that new-comers from the state all come from wherever their business is. Kroger grocery is the best known with decades of efforts and failures. they recently have been making another attempt by doing home deliveries. Won’t they ever learn?

The early effort of Big Boy in Florida was the extension of the mid-western version, Frisch’s Big Boy. That effort saw very well built structures put up all over the state with a running Big Boy in the front of each. All of those were gone by the early 1990s. Many of the structures still stand, not as other businesses. One I have a connection to and hope to get inside of to take some photos. That one is the former Frisch’s Big Boy right on US 441, in Gainesville, is now Walker Architects.

Frisch’s still exists! Still in the mid-west. Here’s their website: https://www.frischs.com/
