Swampy Florida Historic Photos: Digging up the Everglades for the Tamiami Trail, late 1920s.
One of the many dredging machines that tore through the southern part of our state to create the Tamiami Trail roaming from Fort Myers towards Miami.
These dredging machines, come of which “walked”, would break down and some replaced.
This photograph displays early efforts as sand and saw palmetto are present from the ground level. As these machines went deeper, the efforts would break into the limestone rock that is just under the sand and water.
The payment for theĀ jobs for this work were, especially by today’s standards, negligable. Just survivnig the work was an effort. It’s hilarious hearing people “working” today claim “stress”.
This photo is from ‘Historic Lee County: The Story of Fort Myers and Southwest Florida’.
