Fire Horses in Madison – Swampy’s Florida History Comics.
The transition for fire fighters from horse drawn to engine moved was a rocky road. By the end of the 1800s and early 1900s fires were common throughout the cities core areas. With time being of the essence and water levels of nearby water bodies being up and down, access to how to defeat a Florida fire was gambling how to get it done. Horses were most dependable and good, strong horses were much sought after. Especially in Madison in 1914, where 2 years earlier a fire took down their Downtown.
This bit of information of the status of fire equipment, circa 1914, is via ‘The History of madison County’ by Elizabeth Sims.
