Swampy’s Historic Photos: The Publix & Eckerds in Winter Park.
Here’s the Publix and Eckerds at Holieanna Shopping Center on US 17 & 92 in Winter Park. This Publix had the marble and tile mural also as part of the facade, of course. What made this combo a bit different was that you could walk in between the stores with in an in door hallway in the front. Much like a mall. Over the years the mall feature was blended in with the structure and folks were back walking in between the stores in the rain and heat of the outdoors.
I’m trying to remember the five and ten to the left of Publix. Was it a W.T. Grant? Later it became a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Edit: Time reminds me the 5 and 10 was W.T. Grants.
Eckerds, as a business, is gone. The space has been filled with a Tuesday Morning store. Publix has recently been entirely rebuilt. Everything but the old Eckerds space was demolished. That action also ate up the rest of the structure to the left of the picture that once had a fabric store amongst others in it.
On the road today in the Winter Park area and hope to post a current photo of the area on Facebook and later add the image to this post.
This image is from the Pleasant Family Shopping website. I was very happy to find this image. Prior to this I was not aware of a photo of Hollieanna Shopping Center. I wish there was also a photo of the drive-in next door, too! 🙂
My father Charlie Lane was the manager at this store in 1954.
It was a WT Grants on the south side of Publix. Later it was a Cloth World. The picture of PFS is mine. He’s a friend. I have an additional picture that shows the Cloth World as well as a few weeks later when they were stripping off the front of the Publix.
