Swampy’s Florida Postcard Monday: Orlando Air Base, 1943.
Here’s a postcard showing the main entrance of the Orlando Air Force Base off Bennett Road. This entire base is gone as well as all of the entrances that looked like this throughout Florida. The only nod to the base entry is in Venice along their Heritage Park median walkway in between Venice Avenues by the gulf. A smaller version stands that has a paved walking trail through.
This postcard was mailed January 21st, 1943 from “Toothless” Will, School Squadron-Tent City #1, School of Applied Tactics, Orlando. It was mailed to Miss Helen Lewis, 814 Forsythe, Toledo, Ohio. His message mentions that he had just received her letters written January 11th on January 21st.
This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
