Lemon City Train Station, late 1800s. – Swampy’s Friday Train Stops.
Here’s the Lemon City train station in the late 1800s. It wasn’t long before Lemon City became a part of Miami. Lemon City these days is better known as Little Haiti by Haitians who wanted to tag their island name to the area as compared to earlier agricultural pursuits.

People need to respect history. Lemon City still exists and the Lemon City neighborhood can trace its roots to the 1850’s. Many Afro-Americans passionately advocate for the Lemon City name.
Peter, very much agree. It’s to bad there isn’t more respect for our history. Wish the Haitian community felt the same way. Though, the consolidation is almost more to blame for the loss of identity that left so many areas open for renaming.
It’s also sad that Lemon City is recognized by us natives and long-time Floridians, but few others. Even Google maps sends you to “Little Haiti” if you do a search for Lemon City.
It’s pretty much up to those of us passionate about maintaining the Lemon City label to keep getting the word out and hoping to shift to the area’s original title by settlers.
We are very grateful to Dr Enid Pinkney and Georgia Ayres who fight so hard to make everyone remember and respect the Lemon City name. Recently the “South Florida Times” and the “Miami Times” both published wonderful editorials praising Lemon City and demanding that people respect Miami’s history.
FYI. I am a Firefighter at City of Miami Station 9 located on 62 st and NE 1 ct. Our station T shirt proudly states Lemon City, Fl. Go to our Facebook page “firehouse 9”
The Dade Heritage Trust and many other respected groups ask that people respect Miami’s history. Needless to say, I am a stakeholder in Lemon City, Miami, Florida.
Lemon City and Little River are still attracting attention and praise. Many businesses are moving to Little River.
