The Fort Harrison Hotel is still standing on Fort Harrison Avenue as it did when the hotel opened in 1926, at the height of the Florida Boom. It remained a hotel until 1975 when the Church of Scientology bought the ailing structure. The church restored the building into a functional facility as a place that members can stay.

Though Scientology is controversial, it’s pretty certain the building would’ve been demolished long, long ago if not for the effort the church has made to keep the building an active p[art of the community. As the decades have gone by since 1975, more and more of Downtown Clearwater have been demolished for one reason or other with no structure at the level of that which preceded it. Especially the vast parking lots.

The building in the foreground was around a long time. It was taken down about 25 years ago for parking.

This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
