Here’s a brochure from Swampy’s collection for touring the Everglades. There is no date on the brochure, but appears to be from the early ’50s. The price is right, but Gray Line no longer offers this trip. Orlando and Miami are the only stops available for Gray Line tours.
Here’s a postcard, labeled ‘The Bathing Beach’, that was mailed in 1958. The message in the back is very hard to read. Something about a trip for a part of the family and that there are “just 3 of us left, you know.” The card was mailed to Fairmont, Minnesota.
Above is part of Swampy’s Florida record album collection, Glenn W. Turner’s “You Can Better Your Best”.
Glenn W. Turner based his motivational speaking, ‘Dare to be Great’, & product business in Florida as it and he became huge celebrities in the late ’60s and into the ’70s. His fortunes initially rose to enormous heights. Then came crashing down as Federal authorities swept in as Turner was tagged as defrauding thousands of customers by working a pyramid scheme. His stage performances around the country in neon suits & twin midgets came to a halt. The castle he was building in Seminole County stood half-built. Turner was even parodied in an episode of ‘The Rockford Files’ with actor James Hampton doing a superb imitation of Turner. Turner’s life began to become submerged in legal problems.
Eventually Turner was convicted in 1987 and served four years in prison in Arizona. In 1992 Turner returned to Florida and lives today a low-profile life. That is, except for his embracing technology. Via the internet Turner continues his efforts involving motivating people. Below are a few links for more of Turner and his current blog.
