This is the original chapel of the now multi-block large College Park United Methodist Church in Orlando. It was built in 1944 as the original chapel. Later more structures were added, including a larger chapel. It’s now used for the main offices and small ceremonies.
This is a Swampy photograph I took in 2013. This also happens to be my family’s church. My mother helped start the day care there 50 years ago.
You can learn more about the church here: https://cpumc.org/

Well, a certain cartoonist is having troubles drawing a certain baby alligator due to incessant giggling…
Since I’ve been a part of Cartoonist Day and it’s celebration over the years, i can verify it’s existence. 🙂

This recipe is from a once-popular restaurant that has had a 3 chapter story.
The first, was The Dove in Satellite Beach. Started by John Mattiello from Italy who landed in New York City as a teen. Eventually he wound up in Florida and started The Dove, wanting to provide a full service Italian restaurant with top notch food and the best that could be provided. Unfortunately, he had a young son who derailed things with drug use and abuse.
Soon John was back in New York state and Starting Dove II with a daughter.
It was years later, and a son who had tried to clean up his addiction, that The Dove III opened in Downtown Melbourne.
The Father and son were back in action.
Until April 24th of this year, when this location closed as well due to structural and food complaints.
The father had the right idea. Sad that others couldn’t support the dream.
Maybe Dove II will reopen or there will be a Dove IV.
Considering the state of local restaurant operations, and the large chains that want them closed, it’s unlikely.
This recipe that was contributed by the original The Dove to ‘Off the Menu – Central Florida’s Top 100 Restaurants’ Recipes’.

This unmailed postcard celebrates the Florida-based media hit of the 1960s, ‘Flipper’. There were movies, a television series, comics, books, toys, etc. of the program. The concept was created by Ricou Browning, who had also been the underwater ‘Gill-Man’ in the film, ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’.
This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.

In the early 1900s cars were just starting to make their way into Florida. AS folks bought cars and had those delivered to Florida, the first to complain were those delivering cars. The complaint: Roads to drive the car. I interviewed a fellow some 30 years ago who told me of the treacherous trk into Florida to deliver cars back then. Sand, trees, mud and alligators were among the obstacles to navigate.
Here comes the road builders! Most making it up as they went. One of these was M.D. Moody and Sons, based in Jacksonville. Started by Maxey Moody in 1913, the road business became quite profitable and his sons and other family joined in. Moody and Sons was responsible for some part of building major roads all over Duval County and beyond. They also did massive work on bridges that connect Jacksonville.
Over the decades the business expanded into other construction work and other companies. At one point it was the oldest family-run construction company in Florida. Sadly, the main company shuttered in 2013.
