This unmailed postcard celebrates the Florida-based media hit of the 1960s, ‘Flipper’. There were movies, a television series, comics, books, toys, etc. of the program. The concept was created by Ricou Browning, who had also been the underwater ‘Gill-Man’ in the film, ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’.

In the early 1900s cars were just starting to make their way into Florida. AS folks bought cars and had those delivered to Florida, the first to complain were those delivering cars. The complaint: Roads to drive the car. I interviewed a fellow some 30 years ago who told me of the treacherous trk into Florida to deliver cars back then. Sand, trees, mud and alligators were among the obstacles to navigate.
Here comes the road builders! Most making it up as they went. One of these was M.D. Moody and Sons, based in Jacksonville. Started by Maxey Moody in 1913, the road business became quite profitable and his sons and other family joined in. Moody and Sons was responsible for some part of building major roads all over Duval County and beyond. They also did massive work on bridges that connect Jacksonville.
Over the decades the business expanded into other construction work and other companies. At one point it was the oldest family-run construction company in Florida. Sadly, the main company shuttered in 2013.

Swampy’s don’t indulge in adult beverages. have prices changed much since 1953?
What a name for a liquor store! I know this was around for quite awhile and I think there were more of them. If you know more about this store or Francois, please leave your memories in the comment area!
This is from ‘This Week’ for all parts of Broward County, dated November 8th, 1953.

The Wilson’s moved from Ohio to Florida for health reasons. The Willard Wilson’s health improved and he bought an existing diner and turned it into The Marvel Diner. The spot was on Forrest Avenue, which was U.S. 1 at the time. They had chosen a very busy location,as U.S. 1, especially in the 1940s, was one of the major roads bringing tourists and others through Florida.
Wilson’s son tells that he would go to school and return after to nap in a cardboard box under the lunch counter.
This photo is from the ‘2002 Memory Book – Central Florida Mosquito Beaters’.
I can’t find where this book might be avaible for purchase.

Swampy’s Florida Postcard Monday: The Florida Pool, Cypress Gardens, 1961.
Here’s the Esther Williams swimming pool that once was part of Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven. The postcard scene if from the Esther Williams film ‘Easy to Love’, also starring Van Johnson and Tony Martin.
The postcard was mailed June 17th, 1961 to Miss Harriet Jane Zimmerman in Wheeling, West Virginia. This was mailed from Washington, just not sure if it is D.C. or the state. The postmark is “Wash & Graf”. Don’t know what that means. Please post below if you know what that means or with any memories of the Florida Pool at Cypress Gardens.
This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
