Swampy’s Florida Postcard : Flamingo families at Hialeah Park, Miami, 1930s.

The back of the card states that in 1933 at the Hialeah Race Course 69 flamingos were hatched for the first season. Also stated is that the year of this postcard 100 were hatched. unfortunately, this postcard has no year on it. Would guess this is from around 1935.

This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.

The location is a former ‘Mister Donut’ location. The sign is still there, but with ‘The Donut Man instead. Interesting to note that, these days, Mister Donut is mostly set on the other side of the world in Asia.

Swampy’s Florida Food Stops Live, March 2013: Royal Castle, North Miami – plus 2024 Update.

Here’s Swampy at Arnold’s Royal Castle, 12490 NW 7th Avenue, in North Miami. The front is as many Royal Castles were as they closed in the mid-60s. This one and one near Hialeah are the two that survived in Florida. Below is the apron that greets you at the entrance. There’s also a photo inside. The burgers are just as the old Royal Castles were, much like a Krystal burger. Real nice young folks tending the lunch counter.

Update: It was just a few years later that Royal Castle, one of only 2 existing, shuttered. Some rap music guy bought the place and shoved an odd food fusion “soul” food fast food place into the same building. Then attached in the back an even odder addition – a tiny night club.

The new venture started with the unfortunate naming, “Fingalickin”. Ugh. Since, the name became ‘The Licking”. Not much better. Both are unappetizing. As of November 2024 the business continues.

I stopped and tried an offering. Rather expensive and only fair food. Give me Real soul food anytime! What I tried was definitely not that.

Just like the other paintings you’ve seen I’ve done, I will create an original watercolor painting based with cute critters – Florida critters are best. Critters you choose
I’ll take that and put them in a humorous scene.

This year I’m including caricature. You provide the photos & information of their lives and I’ll take it from there.

All will be done in watercolor.
I may have missed something that can be discussed.

You could get one as a gift for someone or for yourself or something else.

$7 for for a 5″ X 7″ watercolor painting on watercolor board

$30 for a 9″ X 12″ watercolor painting on watercolor board.

$60 for a 11″ x 14″ watercolor painting on watercolor board.

$100 for a 16″ x 20″ watercolor painting on watercolor board.

I will do my very best to hand deliver any paintings. Otherwise, postage is extra.
