Honorary Mayor, celebrated American humorist, Robert Benchley does his Mayoral duties in the early 1940s.
Robert Benchley was not much for being outside New York City, but, here, he ventured out.
That reaction by Benchley is real. He wasn’t much for critters, either. Have no idea how he got put in the position seen here. It musta taken some great effort….and cash.

Don’t know the date of this photograph, except that Benchley died by the end of 1945, so this had to proceed that.

Benchley was one of the legendary members of the more-legendary, writers group, The Algonquin Round Table that met once a week or much more at the Algonquin restaurant in the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. Other regular members were Dorothy Parker, George S. Kaufman, Robert Sherwood, Alec Woollcott, Edna Ferber and so many more that set the standard of writing, especially humor writing, from that point on in America.

This photo is from ‘Robert Benchley: A biography‘ (1955) by Nathaniel Benchley (Robert’s son).
