Here’s a postcard of the old Casper’s Gator Jungle. Caspar’s was along US 1 a couple miles north of Dowtown St Augustine. James Casper opened it in 1946 and, after some changes in ownership over the years, it closed in the early ’80s.

Besides alligators, the location was famous for ostriches and ostrich races. The races were on an 1/8th mile track. The rider was in what was known as a “suilky”, a stripped down version of harness racing.

Please feel free to leave any memories you might have of Casper’s.

This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
