Right now in Downtown Orlando through the new Year is the traditional Christmas Star. A variation of the star has been in the center of Orange Avenue near central since the 1950s.
Swampy’s dear friend Jack Kazanzas was an angel of the star. In the early ’80s he noticed the City was not taking care of the star. So he raised enough money to have it repaired.
15 years later Jack found himself battling the City again as the City and Mayor looked to shelve the star for good. He raised quite a ruckus. Jack had a LOT of friends. The mayor relented and the star has continued ever since.
Now angel Jack is no longer with us. He died in 2010. Upon his death, the City named the giant holiday ornament, the Jack Kazanzas Christmas Star. he is so honored each year the star returns to the streets of Downtown Orlando.
By the way, if you get the 2019 Swampy’s Florida Christmas print, look for the annual nod to Jack.
