How car stores have changed over the decades.
The top was pretty typical place to buy cars 80+ years ago. Many of these structures still stand in Florida. Many went from selling cars to repairing automobiles. This one, in Perry, is no longer with us.
The bottom car lot became the norm in the latter part of the 20th century. In the ’80s the proliferation of giant car lots and chain car dealers suddenly ate acres of land. Those are still with us today. These days we see even larger chains and tiny amounts of small lots still around.
The bottom lot is also gone. Eaten away by, of all things, the expansion of US19 and the redirection of the road. With that though in mind: It’s little known that car makers are one of the lobbyists that push for road construction.
