A photograph from the 1880s train depot in Sanford in Seminole County. The depot was dedicated in January 1880 by President Grant as Sanford along the St. Johns River was proving a successful expansion during reconstruction after the Civil War.

Sanford was the hub of business and development through the latter 1800s and into the 1920s. It’s surprising today that Sanford isn’t one of the biggest cities in the state. Starting in the mid 1960s, a combination of the expanding space program and the tourist traps in and around the Disney mess stole away development interests to the north side of Seminole County. The great part of that is the enormous amount of wonderful historic structures still standing around Sanford today that can be experienced by all.

This photograph is from ‘The Classic Eastern American Railroad Routes‘.
A terrific coffee table book covering so much railroad history in text and images.
