Here’s City Island, just east of Beach Boulevard, in Daytona Beach in the 1960s. The field opened in 1914 and Major league Baseball started playing the area in 1920 and still does today.

Since this photo, the ballpark has been rebuilt a couple times. Today the ballpark is named ‘Jackie Robinson Field’. It’s at that spot that the record books mark the first time a black man played pro-ball. Back in ’46, the ball club, the Triple-A Montreal Royals, wanted Robinson to play in the game that was on. The City of Daytona Beach did not press the politically instituted Jim Crow laws and let Robinson play. His playing paved the way for his baseball legendary status. Outside the current grounds is a statue commemorating Robinson and the historic action that took place on the island.
