It was today in 1731 that Spanish pirates invaded the British ship Rebecca in the Caribbean. During the battle that ensued British Richard Jenkin’s ear was sliced off by a Spanish pirate. Jenkins survived to tell his tale and the British government was enraged and went to war against Spain. This led to battles here in Florida as British James Oglethorpe fought to keep the new colony of Georgia out of the hapless Florida Spanish hands. Oglethorpe was successful as Georgia ended up with a firm hold of land north of the St Johns and the Spanish with the land south.

This postcard was mailed March 16th, 1912 from St. Cloud to a Mrs. George Burton of Boston, Massachusetts. The handwriting is so poor, that I can’t make out the message being sent. It’s being sent ‘with much love’ from someone whose name starts with ‘E’. Can’t make out the rest.
Phosphate mining was a common site to find in many parts of Florida. When phosphate was first discovered by Albertus Vogt in Dunnellon a Florida gold rush started and everything thing was being dug looking for it. As the land boom boomed, the hunt for phosphate slowed as For Sale signs were placed on land designated for phosphate mining.
Dunnellon has Boomtown coming this Saturday, celebrating Vogt and the begin of mining phosphate. Phosphate is not something that has turned out well for our state. Nevertheless, the event has brought folks together in the area and the opportunity of learning the history of western Marion County is right there. Thus, Swampy encourages folks to attend Boomtown this April 13th.
This postcard is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.

Visited noted astrologer Dikki-Jo Mullen in Orlando this past Friday. She’s been part of all forms of media presenting astrological charts since the early 1970s. She started at WDBO radio. Went on to the morning program at pop station BJ105 and then on to television on the local public television station, Channel 24. She’s also made 100s of appearances all over Central Florida and, these, days presents using Facebook for her programs.
She lives in a nifty hide-a-way, tucked in a lush landscape of natives on a small lake.
