  • 1717 Britain’s King George I issues Proclamation “For Suppressing Pirates in the West Indies”, granting pirates who surrender a pardon (re-issued 1718). This has a major effect inland and offshore of the land, to be later named, Florida.
  • 1925 29th US Golf Amateur Championship won by Bobby Jones. At the same time one of the early golf courses in Florida is being laid out in Sarasota and will open in 1926 and dedicated to Jones in 1927. The Bobby Jones Golf Club still exists todqay with muliple courses and hiking paved trails.
  • 1950 38.7 inches (98.3 cm) rainfall – over several days – in Yankeetown, Florida (state record).
  • 1957 “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac is published by Viking Press in New York. Kerouac worked on the final version of the book in College Park, Orlando.
  • 1986 NASA launches DoD-1 (classified Department of Defense satellite) from Cape Canaveral.

  • 2017 Hurricane Irma becomes the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin region with winds of 185mph (280km/h)
