Here’s the rebuilt version of Melbourne’s oldest school house. The original was built in 1883 and originally sat along the Indian River before being moved in 1970 to it’s current site at the Florida Institute of Technology. Staff told me it has been rebuilt in this spot a couple times. The most recent happening about nine years ago.
The building was always decked in red. School children didn’t have desks and did all their school work with chalk On a slate. The water pump sat outside to cool thirsty students who attended classes five or six months in Summertime.
