Here’s an ad from a St. Petersburg Apartment guide that is undated but appears to be from the 1940s. One interesting bit here is that there is no actual physical street address given for the building. For many people in today’s world this would be impossible to find because they can’t read maps and don’t know their way around with out punching all of the address information in a digital device.
This is a terrific and exciting ad. I want to go there now. If you haven’t been, the lions, rhinoceros, giraffe and many many animals that can only otherwise be experienced in a zoo or in the wild can be experienced as close as is safely possible by driving through the habitat they live in at Lion Country Safari. It is a fun and thrilling experience.
I do recall this ad being featured on The Tonight Show. It was pointed out due to the relative size of the lion and the car underneath him. Of course, it is a matter of understanding that there is some perspective involved but it did make for a very funny moment… and some pretty good advertising for Lion Country Safari.
Postmarked 1913 this postcard from somewhere near Lee County ended up in Brawley, California. The note on back is a sister not happy that she’s going to have to stay where they are in Florida for “a few more years’. I wonder what did become of the lady?
You might be able to tell that this postcard was handcolored. It was ‘Published by Cochrane’s Book Store, Palatka’.
Below is a relative area of the Caloosahatchee River. This area was the most populated in 1913. However the river does come from further east and starts out of Lake Okeechobee. Communities on the Okeechobee side were around in 1913 and the lady, whose name is not provided on the postcard, could have been living around Clewiston or Moore Haven or anywhere over to Fort Myers.
Since kicking off the Swampy’s Florida website/comic strip/etc started last July, the hope was to introduce a coloring book. It all came together Friday evening at The General Store in Downtown Lakeland. Co-owner of The General Store, Teresa Glover, put it all together and also contributed a lot to the coloring book. Terisa’s little dog and a Downtown Lakeland icon, Sparky, also stars in the coloring book. Above is a photo of Swampy’s handler, Rob Smith, Jr., the coloring book and Sparky in front of The General Store.
Here’s the cover. If you’d like one, please contact The General Store in Lakeland (863-688-5900). It is currently the exclusive seller of Swampy’s 1st coloring book.
In front of The General Store Friday night Rob Smith, Jr. did drawings to help promote the coloring book. The photo above is of Rob handing a drawing to June, who happens to double as Sparky’s manager (Negotiations with Sparky came down to kibbles and bits). Below is a drawing for one of the coloring book recipients.
