The war was on and a message of diligence, being watchful and giving those protecting America a wide berth was the message during the scary days of WWII. The concern for Florida was the bad guys coming by sea to shore. Which they did via U-boats. How many of Hitler’s Army got into Florida will never be known.

The interesting part is that our military was densely stationed all across our state border. Mostly taking over the hotels near the coast. The hotels, like the Biltmore in Coral Gables and the Vinoy in St. Petersburg were commandeered by the military to keep an  eye on things and training. Still Nazis slipped through.

Back to the ad: Travel anywhere was very discouraged, as shown in this ad: “After 10am and before 4pm”. As much for safety as being sure the “Eagle” could move any where needed to for the safety of our country. As the ad states, “Victory comes first”.
