Very sad news to report:The 1927 historic train station in Delray Beach was set on fire by high school students with too much free time and, obviously, no respect for the area they live in.
The line in the Media is that the station was abandoned. Actually it’s owned by the City and they recently poured hundreds of thousands into restoration in the depot, the sidewalks and the area. Then they stuck a couple offices in and then out and walked away.
It had been suspected the restoration was more an effort to give work away than preserve the building. My last stops there have been more than difficult as parking is allocated for everything but the public. So access to the depot was limited without a significant walk.
Considering the City’s efforts before, I suspect they’ll just demolish what’s left.
