Swampy's Florida

The recipe was submitted by Marcia (Mrs. Louis) Frey was the wife of Lou Frey who was a member of the House of Representatives from 1969 to 1979. In his later years he was better known for teaming with Dick Batchelor for a televised and radio political commentary. Frey died in 2019.

This recipe is from ‘”The Best in Cooking” in Melbourne, Florida’. The book has a collection of recipes of people from around the area and beyond. Most interesting are recipes from current, at the time, and former Florida political leaders. Included are recipes from the wives of former vice-president Spiro Agnew, former governor Claude Kirk and much more.

This collection is, apparently, a franchise cook book run out of New Jersey. Their objective was to get various cities to sign on to the template of their cook book concept. Then the folks of the city would gather advertisers and recipes and piece together the cookbook and send it to New Jersey for production. The results of the ones I’ve seen and this one I have are, basically, cheap cardboard covers and interior paper. The advertising layout is very poor and likely the reason this was a one shot for most cities. I’m sure the folks in new Jersey profited well by it all.

This cookbook is not available and very hard to find. Though, have seen it cross through EBay occasionally. This book is part of the Swampy’s Florida collection.
