Swampy’s Florida Halloween Movies: Creature from the Black Lagoon

The 1954 film, ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’, is not known for it’s Florida location shots. However, the underwater scenes were shot in, what is now, Ed Ball Wakulla Springs State Park thirty minutes south of Tallahasasee. The underwater shots of The Gill-Man were shot at the springs due to the clearness of the spring water.

Fort Pierce native Ricou Browning wore the underwater version of The Gill-Man suit and actress Ginger Stanley doubled for Julie Adams as the lady in distress underwater.

I could write for hours about and all that came from it involving film in Florida. It was a real wake up call to the silly idea of making films in Florida and occasionally has been massively ignored just to have reality stop the silliness and the film folks go away again.

I need to do a podcast about this.

Jacksonville Zoo – Swampy’s Florida Tuesday Ads.

In the past week I’ve referred online, in Messenger and otherwise to the cartooning on this Jacksonville Zoo brochure, circa 1960.  The artwork  is  not signed and it’s likely the artwork is gone to history. So very much of the artwork made for advertising is posted with no signature and the artist involved is never to be known. Worse, rarely is the artwork kept and that, too, is gone. That is mostly the fate of artwork seen in commercial products. Here and gone.

The artwork for the Zoo includes artwork on another part of teh brochure and a full map. That map took some work!

About the zoo: It’s still with us! The place initially opened in 1914 and relocated to where it is today in the midst of the Boom in 1925.

Swampy’s Postcard : The Burt Reynolds Theater, Jupiter.

Actor, Burt Reynolds built this theater in Jupiter and opened in 1979. It was just north of Riviera Beach where he grew up and his father was a municipal police officer. The theater was very successful at first and Reynolds added acting classes to the options there. As theaters in general suffered, Reynolds passed the theater to a management company and the theater further slipped to closing in 1996. Reynolds then sold the structure and it eventually passed through a series of hands until a group of locals picked it up and slapped it with the name, Maltz (What a name). The place still exists today with many additions and structural changes.

Yeehaw Junction Stuckey’s in 2004 – Swampy’s Florida Travels.

Stuckey’s as it was in 2004 in Yeehaw Junction, the one-time crossroads for cowboys some 125 years ago along, what is now, US 441 and SR 60, just off the Florida Turnpike.

After decades pumping gasoline, providing burgers and pecan logs, the spot is no longer a Stuckeys. Though, you can still purchase Stuckey’s Pecan Logs there. The store used to have a massive array of Stuckey’s items. There are just a small percentage of that today.

That stuffed Swampy doll watermark is the first Swampy bought at – Guess where? – That very Stuckeys!
The current traveling Swampy is an 8th generation hand made by Terisa Glover of Bartow.

The Stuckey’s Company is doing a far better job than most all businesses on the internet with history of it’s business.
