Swampy’s Florida Postcard Thursday: The Melbourne Hotel, Melbourne, 1952.

This postcard of the former Melbourne Hotel was mailed from Grant, just south of Melbourne, December 11th, 1952 from Flossie to Mrs. Naomi Jackson, 3342 Morrison Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio. Flossie writes that he didn’t stay at the hotel above, but at the ‘Carter Hotel’ in Grant, a few miles south of Melbourne and home of the annual Grant Seafood Festival.

Today the Melbourne Hotel still stands and is active as an office business now known as the 1900 Building, the address that the Melbourne hotel since it was built. The hotel rooms are now space for a slew of different businesses. I toured the building a few months ago. I’ll post some of those photos over the weekend.

Swampy’s Florida says Happy Lumberjack Day!

There are still lumberjacks today and many men who work in timber industry here in Florida. There are hundreds of square miles of trees cut down to make a huge variety of paper products. The timber industry has been huge in Florida since the 1800s. The best place to learn about Florida’s timber industry is a trip to the Forest Capital Museum State Park near Perry.

Here’s an advertising card for ‘Flipper’s Sea School’ that existed from 1972 to 1977. Prior to that the location was known as ‘Santini’s Porpoise School’ and housed one of the porpoises from the TV series ‘Flipper’. After 1977, the location became the ‘Dolphin Research Center’, which is the name it is today.
