Wednesday during Swampy’s Florida live, I inked the above live. No plan. Made up as I drew.
The entire drawing illustrates the Florida historical happenings from August 7th.
Below is the list of the happenings I referred to.
Can you match each of the events to parts of the drawing?
– 1953 – Miami based Eastern Airlines enters jet age, uses Electra prop-jet
– 1956 – Boston Red Sox fine slugger Ted Williams $5,000 for spitting at heckling Boston fans, third incident in 3 weeks. Williams initially had a home in Florida and then lived out his latter life in Citrus County and died in Inverness. He had various interests in real estate in Florida.
– 1960 Arnold Palmer’s 20th PGA Tour win; rallies from a 5-stroke deficit to enter a playoff, then beats Jack Fleck and Bill Collins to win the Insurance City Open. Palmer had extensive Florida real estate and golf course holdings all over the peninsula, including a few homes.
– 1971 Apollo 15 returns to Earth after launch from Cape Canaveral and stop at moon for drinks.
– 1976 US Viking 2 goes into Martian orbit after 11-month flight from Cape Canaveral (AKA Earth).
– 1981 “The Washington Star” ceases all operations after 128 years of publication. Jim Ivey was the political cartoonist for the Star before moving back south to do same for St Petersburg Times and Orlando Sentinel. He also started the OrlandoCon that became MegaCon and The Cartoon Museum.
– 1990 US deploys troops to Saudi Arabia, beginning Operation Desert Shield. MacDaill AFB in Tampa was the strategic center for the military operations and became known world wide due to the mailitrary action.

Next Swampy’s Florida Live should be August 15th at 7pm.
