The Sportsman’s Lodge was built around 1926-27. It was a lodge mostly for fisherman to stay and then launch into the St. Johns River, drop a line and pulling in fish over days or weeks. The site was located along the eastern shore of the St. Johns River in the city of Welaka in Putnam County. This was back when fishing in Florida was king and Welaka was a far better known community.
The location went well until the late ’60s. The early ’70s saw the multi-story lodge close. The building was torn down in 1978. Today, the typical Florida condo structure stands there now with a fraction of fishing occurring.
Most point to the smaller toruist attractions have ing their customers sucked away by the Disney place. Fishing statewide was also hit hard. Especially as realtor/developers eyed land to build homes for the new tourists and the retiree crowd increased in the early ’70s.

Trilby is strolling through the woods to a picnic and is bothered by an intruding alien & his transportation device. The lone extraterrestrial inquires as to the nearest burger joint. Trilby points the way to the The Burger Inn, though, in truth, he’s not quite sure where he is at the moment.

Here’s an image of Tampa from around 1924. The view is from Zack Street looking east towards Port of Tampa. That’s that waterway in the background. Though, it’s much wilder than the canaling that would further control it for continuing shipping through the area.
Note all of the trees and parking. The courthouse, in the middle ground, is still kinda there. It’s been added to and turned into a hotel with a pretentious name. The Sacred Heart Church is still there and looks the same 100 years later.
This postcard is postmarked December 22nd, 1924. Hard to read who sent the card. The message mentions that “Willard and Ernest gone fishing”. It was mailed to Mr. & Mrs. Howard James, Sinclairville, New York.
