Trilby, Zuber and Alva get in the pirate mood above. A couple centuries ago the above might not be such an unusual scene on certain parts of our Florida coastline. There were many pirates that thrived on getting treasure from passing ships.
Zuber protects the egg he has for Chicken Month. Feel free to post a name that you chicken the chick inside should have when hatched. It should be a name related to Florida. We’ll find out the chick’s name at the end of September, Chicken Month.
This postcard is dated from 1955. The message on the back to someone in Largo, Florida, is about the misadventures of a couple and their car that keeps breaking down in Perry, Tallahassee, etc.

Vernon, the raccoon, strums a country tune for Country Music Day. A nod to country music legend and Florida born Mel Tillis, who was born in Dover (near Tampa). Tillis was raised mostly down in Pahokee after his family moved to the shores of Lake Okeechobee. Tillis is best known for having a stutter when he speaks and then a clear dynamite voice when singing.
Many got to know Tillis through his hilarious appearances on programs such as The tonight Show, Merv Griffin, etc. During his visits to these programs he would make fun of his stutter and also wow the audience with his vocal cords. Below is Tillis singing a couple of his best known songs.
This first video was filmed in Orlando at the famous Cheyenne Saloon, once part of the Rosie O’Grady entertainment complex.

Swampy’s Postcard Monday: The Cypress Gardens Florida Pool
Here’s a postcard of the Florida pool built by Dick Pope at his Cypress Gardens to entice films to be produced at the Winter Have site. He specifically was looking to lasso swimming champ and film star, Esther Williams, to put a cinematic spotlight on Cypress Gardens. It worked. Williams made a number of films and a TV special at the attraction.
