Here’s a matchbook for Orlando radio station, WDBO (Way Down By Orlando). The station moved from the address shown above in the late 80s to a huge facility on John Young Parkway. WDBO is now an AM station playing sports programs. It’s FM version plays various political commentary and other programs.
Through the years WDBO presented folks on the air that became local celebrities, like Perry Moore and Jim Turner. Even Orlando Police officer Jim Bishop would go on the air for a CrimeTips segment and soon asked to become a regular. He also became a regular local celebrity. Likely the best known Orlando police officer since police chief Robert Chewning in the ’60s.
WDBO is the longest running station in Central Florida and started as an experiment in 1924 at Rollins College in Winter Park, a few miles north of Orlando.
Despite the long and important history of WDBO, it’s surprising that neither website for the two current incarnations of WDBO even reference that history.
