Postcard Wednesday – Tomoka River
Here’s a card of the Upper Tomoka River in Volusia County. There’s no date on the back, but I would suspect the 1920s. Notice the canoe and the occupants on the middle left side.

This ad is from a copy of ‘This Week’ from November 8th, 1953. ‘This Week’ was an advertising circular for many, many years around Broward County.
If you have any memories of this ‘This Week’, the Port-O-Cal Motel or Fort Lauderdale, please feel free to leave them here!
This restaurant was around for a looooooong time at what is now the Orlando Executive Airport. The building still exists and the Skyline area, I believe is used for office space. This is from an Orlando – Winter Park Attraction Guide from 1962.

This morning Punta Gorda Pete, the Ground Roach, appeared from the drain pipe in Coleman, Florida. After a short crawl in the heavy humidity, Pete’s antennae popped from the drain grate. His head soon appeared and then with a fleeting glance at the outside world, he was gone.
The news is that Pete did not see his shadow, which means 6 less weeks of Tourist Season!
Pete’s accuracy rate has been pretty solid due to his uncanny ability to see and not-see his shadow. Florida had best gear up and prepare to work harder to bring more tourists to Florida to prove Pete wrong!
Punta Gorda Pete first appeared in Orlando atop Orlando City Hall in 1988. He continued there until the building was imploded, as seen in the 1991 film, ‘Lethal Weapon 3’. Pete can’t help but shed a tear anytime he watches his home go up.. and down… in the film. He relocated to Lee County and Matlacha shortly after. The current Matlacha bridge construction lead to sleepless nights and Pete relocated to Sumter County.
Take me out to the ball game in Sarasota to the Spring Training site of the baseball team, the Boston Red Sox. There’s no date on the back of the card, but I would say this is from the 1940s. What do you think?
Please feel free to add any memories or thoughts about the ball field. I know the baseball team left Sarasota and went to Winter Haven and then to Fort Myers. Apparently there was serious consideration of returning to Sarasota in 2008.
